iRest Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is an ancient practice from India, but like most modern yoga has been transformed by the west.
Yoga Nidra is often translated as Yogic Sleep, another more full translation is:

Yoga: knowingly awake as the unconditioned, ineffable mystery that interconnects all of life
Nidra: across al states of consciousness: waking and sleeping

What’s a Yoga Nidra class like?

If you’ve been in a yoga class and been lucky enough to have a teacher who gives you a long, quiet Savasana at the end of the class, you may have felt the lovely quality of “Being” that can be accessed during yoga. Yoga Nidra is a guided meditative practice all about that quality of “Being” and accessing our true nature “Awareness”.

What will happen?

You lie down (although it can be practiced sitting or even standing!) and make yourself comfortable with props, such as bolsters, eye pillows and blankets. You are then guided through the practice which involves becoming aware of sensations, thoughts, feelings and emotions. It is a deeply relaxing and transformational practice. Being guided into a conscious yet deep sleep, one is able to access and learn from ones inner awareness. Surfing the states between wakefulness and sleep, the body finds equilibrium and we fall into an innate state of blissful awareness. As we rest here we can turn our attention easily and effortlessly to the very nature of awareness and consciousness. You will in effect experience a meditative state without having formally ‘meditated’.

Who is it suitable for?

Absolutely anybody can practice Yoga Nidra. It is suitable for people who have: chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer, depression, anxiety, a difficulty relaxing, post traumatic stress disorder, or anyone that wants to meditate and find a deeper awareness.

The type of Yoga Nidra I teach

I teach iRest Yoga Nidra developed by Renowned clinical psychologist, author, researcher and yogic scholar Richard Miller, founder of the Integrative Restoration Institute and iRest Yoga Nidra.

And some words from it

The Integrative Restoration Institute (IRI) provides programs and teacher trainings that show you how to live a contented life, free of conflict and fear, by opening your mind and body to its inherent ground of health and well-being. It is our vision to help people resolve their pain and suffering by rediscovering their essential wholeness and their interconnectedness with all of life. From this place of discovery, trauma and difficult life situations are then met with a deeply wise and compassionate response. iRest Yoga Nidra, one of the principal programs offered by IRI, is a research-based transformative practice of deep relaxation and meditative inquiry that:

• releases negative emotions and thought patterns
• calms the nervous system
• develops a deep capacity to meet any and all circumstances you may encounter in life

Research has shown that iRest Yoga Nidra effectively reduces:

• Depression
• Anxiety
• Insomnia
• Chronic pain
• Chemical dependency
